The
Veteran-Cycle Club holds its
Memorial Ride in late April each year. For many years it was known as
The Les Wooding Ride, but a few years ago it became the Memorial Ride,
honouring not only Les Wooding, but also David and John Pinkerton. It's
always a very enjoyable event.
This year's ride had no folders (there is usually at least one), but
there was a good turn out of Moultons, including some separable models,
and that despite the fact that one of the regular Moulton supports was
not riding this year. In addition, several well-known folder
enthusiasts and Moultoneers were present riding other, older, bicycles.
Our selection of photographs below is intended to give you a flavour of this most enjoyable event. Apologies for the rather poor quality of the photos - I thoughtlessly took a very compact camera with me which has rather slow autofocus and no control over shutter speed.
Riding through the lanes on a glorious spring day, amidst the
blossom.
Some riders
were wearing
appropriate period clothing (centre). On the left is Lorna Wray (1911
Unity), a regular attendee at our Origami Rides, though she usually
uses a Brompton for those events. In the background, indicating a left
turn, is Doug Pinkerton on a Humber Ordinary c 1885.
Below: Modern Moultons - Mike Roberts on an AM, Mike Fairman on a much-modified fx8, and on the right, Sandra Evans on a hub-geared Jubilee L.
Below: There were three F-frame Moultons - my Stowaway, and the Hando family on a Mk III (with child trailer) and Super 4.
Philippa
Wheeler, riding on this
occasion a Royal Enfield Sports Roadster - purchased by her father in
1933.
Dave
Minter was riding a 1910 Pedersen (foreground), while Paul Evans
bravely
tried a Bantam - pedals mounted on the (geared) front hub, and fixed
wheel! He reported that he had fallen off several times the previous
Friday while trying to familiarise himself with the bike, but
fortunately had no such problems on the day of the ride.
Below: There were several
interesting combinations of bikes parked together at the morning coffee
stop.
Below: Left - Phil Wray on a 1903 Wulfruna, dressed for the part. Right: Another pair of folder regulars are Dick (where did you get that hat?) Hanson on a 1950's Rudge and wife Hazel on a 1936 BSA Ladies Sport.
Many thanks to all those who were involved in the organisation of this most enjoyable event.
