Duarte, California, November 23, 2001 – Dahon California, Inc., the world leader in portable folding bicycles, today celebrated the completion of a move to a new factory in China that doubles Dahon’s capacity to manufacture frames, components and assembled bicycles. The new factory is located in Shenzhen, China and is situated on a 17,000 m2 site with 14,000 m2 of floor space. Production began on November 1st.
“Growing demand for our products had really strained the capacity of our former factory,” stated Dr. David Hon, Dahon president. “Now we have the space we need to increase production capacity and streamline our entire production process. We’ll be implementing ISO production standards early next year so this move allows us to really focus on process engineering. Another big benefit is that we are now much closer to our parts suppliers.”
Dahon’s activities at the new factory will remain the same as before, namely frame manufacture, folding component production, and complete bicycle assembly. In addition to a bicycle assembly line, the factory is equipped with steel and aluminum frame production lines and stamping equipment for Dahon’s patented folding mechanisms.
The improved production efficiency offered by the new factory will enhance Dahon’s high end and low end offerings. In recent years, Dahon has gained rave reviews for its high end bicycles that make use of patented new technology. At the same time, Dahon has introduced a line of very low cost “economic” folding bicycles that deliver excellent value.
Dahon currently employs 250 people at the factory. Production capacity for assembled bicycles is 10,000/month and 20,000/month for frames. Frames produced at Dahon’s China factory are also supplied to Dahon’s production bases in Taiwan and Macau, as well as for OEM factories.
