CycleFest is billed as having been created for and by those who have an interest in cycling alternatives. This year a rather late decision was made that this would be an ideal venue at which to hold the Bike Friday UK Gathering, rather than have our own event just for Fridayists. This offered the advantages of not having to do much organisation ourselves, availability of facilities for camping, B&B, meals, rides etc, and lots of activities already organised for those attending the event. Against that had to be set the fact that, with so much going on, the opportunities for purely Friday-related activities were going to be limited. Those Fridayists who were able to get to CycleFest certainly seemed to enjoy the event. The weather was very kind to us, apart from the final Monday, particularly considering how poor this summer has been generally. With so much going on, we didnt have a dedicated ride for Friday folk, nor were any of the Friday riders keen on participating in the racing, but there was plenty of opportunity for chatting amongst ourselves. Many thanks to the CycleFest team for providing such an excellent event.
I
travelled to Lancaster by train, thus missing the rather wet weather,
early on the Wednesday. Nevertheless, I arrived around lunch time, before
things started happening, so I decided to go for a ride. Thus in this
picture the Pocket Rocket is still loaded up with panniers. The large
package on the top of the rear rack is actually a spare wheel - not for
the Friday, but for Pat Strachans AM Moulton, which had suffered a
disaster a few days earlier.

Our
photographer couldnt resist the opportunity to take this picture of
a Friday and a Mundie together - pity we couldnt fit a (Tandem) TwosDay
in as well! The Mundie is one of a small number of bikes made by Steve
Mundie from Harrogate for his and wife Alis use. Some of them have
separable frames (using S & S couplings) but this beautifully finished
example had a fixed frame. The gold lettering on a lightish metallic
yellow is very attractive, but doesnt show up too clearly in the
photograph.
