Another Century Ride on the Longest Day

By David Cox

I also did my Folding Century on the Beacon 161km Audax Rollright Challenge. No real "experiences" but a good sweeping ride through the beautiful Cotswold countryside with better than forecast weather. Quick stop at the Rollright Stones - a mini Stonehenge with one Druid, a couple of new agers and various tourists. 114 miles door to door.

As anyone who has seen the Bike Friday posse at Folder Forum will know, the Friday stands up well as an Audax/fast tourer. I did the 100 miles in 8 hours and did my share on the front of the bunch until I finally got dropped by the club group soon after lunch. So I hung on longer than I managed last year on a conventional, but knee-knackering, high geared sports bike. The Friday is fun, quick and nimble and good on hills. It's also good for slip-streaming in a bunch because you can tuck in very close behind a wheel. The only limit on performance is your own fitness. Obviously you can get a good conventional bike for less money, but they don't go in suitcases.
